The theme for today's photo is childhood. I grew up in Georgia, just south of Atlanta. As a child, one of our favorite activities was to collect fireflies in little glass jars. Growing up in the San Francisco Bay area, my children have not had the opportunity to see fireflies. In the summer of 2005 I took the kids to visit their grandma who still lives in Georgia. One warm evening the fireflies were everywhere. We all headed outside and the kids were just delighted. While the photo is not the best, I feel it captures their delight and amazement at these tiny little creatures. If you click on the picture, you should be able to see a couple of the fireflies near the bottom.

We use to live in San Ramon and my kids had never seen fireflies either. We moved to North Carolina 3 years ago and it was magical the first time the saw that little light in the sky. They have not showed up this year yet but we are waiting.

That brings back a lot of great memories of chasing fireflies at my grandmother's house many, many years ago. I'm sure it will be favorite memory for your children, too.

What a wonderful thing for them to experience... there is nothing like catching fireflies on a hot summer evening!

Here in the Philippines, we just had a Tour of the Fireflies freedom ride held last month. Though my husband wanted to participate, he did not manage to wake up early for the said event. The aim of this is make people aware of the environmental issues and about having clean air. It is believed that fireflies won't be able to survive air that is dirty or in an environment with a lot of pollution. There is something about fireflies that is magical, almost unreal. I like your choice of photo.

Mine's going to be up in a short while (yeah, it is late, it's Monday already where I am)
